Concussions just don't happen on the Football Field

Back in August of 2011 I wrote about my worries when my son plays football and how important it is to get a Baseline Concussion Test done.  You can read all about it here Baseline Impact testing.....a mom's football worries.

Last week we had a little scare and my son got a concussion, and he wasn't on the football field.  He was milking cows, yes you heard me right he was milking cows.

My son works for a farmer who is a family friend. My brother in-law is the farmers best friend.  My Husband, brother in-law and son all work for this farmer.  I trust him with my family and would never, ever think that something would happen were one of them would have gotten hurt.

Anyways back to my story.  My son works 2 days a week and then every other weekend, milking for the farmer and then doing field work.  Last Wednesday while my son was milking a fresh cow kicked him in the head. I know your probably thinking with its hoof but it was more like the cows legs to the side of my sons head, above his ear and on the side of his face by his cheek & temple.  He said that he saw stars and was a little shaken up.  He knew he was in the barn & he was milking but after he got to his feet he couldn't remember what day it was and what he had done during the day or anything during the week.  Then as his brain started to catch up with him everything came back to him.  He shook it off like it was no big deal, finished milking the cows, helped take a tractor to a field and then drove home.  (Later he remembered that he puked on his drive home.)  Like this was no big deal.  He was working late and came home around 11pm.  He knew it was late and not wanting to upset mom he went to bed without telling me what had happened.

The next morning, I went to wake him and he was very tired.  It took me three times to get him out of bed. Not knowing what had happened the night before I was a bit upset with him because I knew he had worked too late for a school night.

Once he got upstairs, even before he said good morning he burst out "Mom I have a confession" this is what I thought he said and my reply was "What did you do now?" he said "No Mom not a confession a Concussion!" I went into immediate panic mode and was like why did you not not wake me last night and tell me what happened.  Do you not know that you might have not woken up this morning! I was wide awake and started looking over him and asked what happened and where he got kicked while he explained the entire story.  I asked him if he had a headache and he said he didn't.  I asked him if he thought he should go to the doctors and he said he was fine.  He said he has gotten hit harder in football and seen stars and was fine.  I went into OMG Mom Mode!  What?!? He got hit harder in football and didn't tell me either! AGG!!!! My heart sank and I just wanted him to crawl up into my lap and let me hold him and tell him everything was going to be ok and kiss his owie away.  I was so worried about him, my baby hurt and there was nothing I could do about it! I asked him if he wanted to stay home from school and he said that he was fine and if he got worse he would call me.

Two hours later I get a call from his Friend Blake (you might remember Blake from a previous post) Blake-"Mom, this is Blake. Tyler & I are in German and he's not himself. I poke him in the head and he keeps telling me it hurts. He's not fighting back. He got kicked in the head last night milking and you need to come and pick him up. I'll drive his car to my house and you can pick it up there. But you need to come and pick him up and take him to the Doctors."

I told Blake that I knew what happened but Tyler said he was ok.  Blake said he was not and that he was going to kick him to the office & I was supposed to come and pick him up. So I called Ty and he didn't answer. I text Ty & he didn't respond.  So whats a mom to do but call the school.

I talked with Kathy the school secretary and told her what was going on.  She told me to hold on and that she was going to walk down to the German room and get Tyler.  Let me tell you that was the longest time I have ever been on hold.

Tyler got on the phone and said that he did have a headache, but felt ok. I told him that Blake wouldn't call me if he wasn't worried about him and that I thought that I should take him in to make sure everything was ok.  He agreed and I told him I would call Kathy back with the details and would text him the time I would come and pick him up and to call me if things got worse!

The time that passed between me picking him up and taking him to the doctors seems like it took forever.  I was a wreak.  My mind was racing.  I remembered the concussion test. I searched my email to find the link to his results and called Gillett to see how I could get those results to our clinic.  I called the clinic back to see where they needed to be sent and they told me to hold off, to see first how he is.  No need for the test results now, they need to see how he is and how sever the concussion is before they do any comparison.  But just me knowing that I had made Tyler take the test last year gave me a peace of mind that if he did have a concussion we could tell how bad it was from his baseline test.

So to make this long post not any longer, the result was that he did have a concussion, but they could not tell the level.  We are supposed to monitor him over the next couple of weeks and if anything changes we need to go back.  I'm glad to report this week has gone well. No other cows have kicked him in the head while milking and his headaches have gone away.  I think were in the clear  for now, its just a very scary thing.

Here is a picture from my son's facebook wall joking about the situation, but he knows now how serious it can be and how concussion just don't happen on the Football field.

Here is the link to the baseline concussion test at Gillette Children's Hospital. If you child plays sports or milks cows its important to get this done!

Easy Rhubarb Crisp Reciepe

Today I'm going to share with you the easiest Rhubarb Crisp Recipe I have ever made.  Plus its the best I have ever tasted. My husband will eat the entire pan & I'm lucky if I get one or two pieces.

Below the stinker got into it before I could take a picture of the finished product. Like I said, its super good and doesn't last long in our house.

Rhubarb Crisp

4 cups Rhubarb-cut into 1 inch or smaller pieces
3/4 cup sugar
1 egg, well beaten
1/4 cup butter The real stuff. DO NOT use margarine!
1/3 cup brown sugar, packed. I let it over flow a bit.
2/3 cup all purpose flour

Mix together the rhubarb, sugar, and egg.  Place in 9 inch square baking dish. Combine the butter, brown sugar and flour and sprinkle over the rhubarb mixture. Bake in a 350 degree oven for 30 minutes. Serve warm or cold tastes great both ways.  We top with cool whip.

Blogger Outreach 101

Below is an Step By Step process that I developed for a current client to reach out to bloggers.  I hope this helps others that are looking to reach out to bloggers to promote their product or service.

Step One:

1) The first step is to find the bloggers within the niche. Go to Technorati , Google Blog Search , Google and search for bloggers that are talking about your company. Look in web directories such as Yahoo Directory, DMOZ  and BOTA for blogs in the industry.  Forums are also a great place to look as well. Also check out blogrolls from the sites you know are relevant – it’s always good to know what the bloggers you’re reaching out to are reading.  PeopleBrowsr - is another site to help find bloggers. You can filter via location, influence & communities to zero in on who is worth reaching out to.

Make a list of at least 20 bloggers that have blogged about your company within the last 2 weeks. Concentrate on bloggers that appear to be evangelizing your company, but also add some bloggers that are critical of your efforts. You also need to reseach these bloggers.  To do that you can Use sites like Klout and PeerIndex to note each blogger’s influence. You can also experiment with Kred , Twitalyzer or TweetLevel,.  You will want to keep track of these scores as well on the spreadsheet.

Narrow down your list to include the top ranking blogs within your niche. Research the number of followers and the traffic to their websites. You can measure this by using various tools such as; Alexa & Compete, just to name a couple. How frequently the blogger posts is important but if they haven’t blogged in a while, don’t let that be a deterrent. Your message might be the right one to get them blogging again.

2) After you have your list of at least 20 bloggers that are talking about your company, go back to every blog and respond to the blog post where your company is mentioned. Clearly identify yourself, and your position with the company. Address only the topics presented, and any relevant information. Invite replies from readers. Thank the blogger for the comment, and then go back and email them thanking them for their comments, and let them know that you are available for a short phone discussion or interview, if they are interested.

3) Subscribe to the feeds from all the blogs you commented on, as well as their comment feeds, if available. If your company has a blog, add links to any bloggers that are evangelizing your company on your company blog’s sidebar.

Get to know your bloggers and build relationships. Follow your bloggers on Twitter – whether from your brand’s or company’s account or your own – and talk to them. If you’ve got something interesting to say, they’ll listen.

Take every opportunity you can to make connections offline – such as industry events and conferences – or even think about hosting a blogger event of your own.

Visit your list of blogs again, and read any new posts, and also reply to any comments that were addressed to you, or relevant comments that other readers have left.

4) Answer any emails from bloggers, and if possible, schedule times to discuss topics raised with blogger on the phone, or via interview.

Don’t just send a blogger a press release and hope for the best. Tailor your message and demonstrate that you know why you’re writing to them. Which piece(s) of content on their blog were interesting or prompted you to write to them? Write to the blogger like they’re a human being but don’t be too over-familiar. Use an open and friendly tone of voice and unless you really think it suits, don’t be too formal. Get to the point!

Step Two and Beyond:

1) Every day you need to read the blogs and comment. This is the part of blogger outreach that becomes daunting because it’s no doubt time-consuming—and difficult to fit into your busy schedule. Yet if blogger outreach is a priority for you (and it very well should be), this initial investment of your time will pay off down the road. Just as it takes time to build a business, a Facebook fan page or a Twitter following, it takes time to build a blogger outreach network. But once you have that network in place, it becomes an invaluable part of your digital outreach strategy.

2) At least twice a week, you should again check Technorati and Google Blog Search for new mentions about your company.

3) After you’ve established relationships with some of your target bloggers, feel free to reach out with a blog pitch. Before you send it, take time to ensure your pitch is thoughtfully written. Also, be strategic. Tailor your pitch to the blogger you’re reaching out to and you’ll be amazed at the results you can see. Do not Mass email pitch. These almost never work, and frequently backfire. Actually taking the time to talk to Blogger in THEIR space is MUCH more effective.  Don’t just send a blogger a press release and hope for the best. Tailor your message and demonstrate that you know why you’re writing to them. Which piece(s) of content on their blog were interesting or prompted you to write to them?

Write to the blogger like they’re a human being but don’t be too over-familiar. Use an open and friendly tone of voice and unless you really think it suits, don’t be too formal . Get to the point! You want the blogger to write something for you, so don’t make their life difficult. Attach images that they’d otherwise have to take from your website, give them accurate information, include links and make the information you’re presenting straightforward.

Why this will benefit Your Company and all other online brands:

1 – It will get you noticed in the blogosphere. This is a coordinated effort to reach out to bloggers and to engage them in their space. What you are basically saying is that ‘I respect you enough to take the time to respond.’ That’s HUGE! According to, BlogPulse there are close to 180 million blogs on the Internet. And although the vast majority of these are hobby blogs, the power and reach of the blogosphere as a whole has become undeniable. Bloggers are now seen as powerful and influential sources of information, some rivaling even the largest media companies. Imagine tapping into a fraction of this reach to help broadcast your company’s message. Sure, blogger outreach is time-consuming, but when you consider that the largest investment is your time, you can likely reap more significant results than you would through more traditional channels of marketing or advertising.

2 – It will show bloggers that you are serious about starting a conversation with them. This is why you can’t do this once, you have to make it a habit to read blogs from your evangelists (and even detractors). This wins even more respect among bloggers.

3 – It will get bloggers talking about your company. It is still rare for companies to make a sincere effort to monitor and respond to bloggers as part of a marketing strategy. It also encourages bloggers to evangelize your company, AND, just as importantly, it encourages OTHER bloggers to evangelize your company. This is literally creating a network of bloggers that will be more likely to promote and evangelize your company.

4 – It will greatly improve your social media and marketing efforts. Simply talking to your customers and potential customers in their space in the blogosphere is a wonderful way to better understand them, but also to better understand how social media works. It’s one thing to hear about how quickly ideas spread in the blogosphere, it’s quite another to spend a few hours talking to bloggers on their blogs, and then to see how quickly other bloggers link to your actions.

5– It shows bloggers that ‘you get it’. This makes bloggers much more likely to pay attention to your company, and blog about you, your products, and marketing efforts. Which means the network of bloggers that are talking about your company is further expanded. Which doesn’t hurt your company’s Google presence either.

6- Finally, say thank you. And mean it.  A quick email, a re-tweet, a link posted on Twitter – simple things to show your gratitude, show-off the coverage to your audience and (hopefully) reward the blogger with some lovely traffic back!

Best of all, all this is FREE.  It just requires someone to manage it.

Fifty Shades of Grey...One Girls take on Christian Grey

Have you been the victim of the Fifty Shades of Grey Trilogy like I have?

Feeling like you need more and anything you read now just does not compare?

Well me too!!!

One day my BFF told me that I needed to add Fifty Shades of Grey to my reading list. I was like I don't have time to read the 5 million books I have already downloaded on my Kindle, iTunes and Nook app for my iPad.  Like I need one more to add to that list! Well I'm glad that she did because one day when both my Husband and Son were working I decided that it was time for me to enjoy a book.  Little did i know it was going to be three books that sucked me in and didn't let me go to bed at night until I read just "One More Chapter", that actually turned into 3 or 4 until finally I could not not see the words on my iPad anymore!

What a great series of books.  And I don't say that just because of all the SEX aka Kinky Fuckery.  I think what it did for me was that I could relate to Ana, she is the always defining girl that can't be told what to do and is going to do anything to protect her man.  Plus even though I have told the Hubs on several occasions that I can take care of myself, I really want to be taken care of and know that someone is always looking out for me.  Plus the guys is filthy rich and how much fun would that be to have everything and anything your heart desired!!!

I really didn't like how the first book ended, not one bit. But the second picked up right were the first one left off. (Just a sick ploy to make you buy the next book

The third book is defiantly the happen ending everyone wanted! Makes me want to marry a rich, sexy man. Have his babies and lay in the meadow and be his sex slave!

And if you have not heard they are making the books into a movie.  Not sure how all that Kinky Fuckery will get played out on the big screen unless they disclose it might be a porn.  Anyways Mr. Matt Bomer is my pick for Christian Grey

I think Matt would be the perfect, shirtless, sex on the library pool table Christian Grey, CEO of Grey Enterprises!

People is saying these are the current picks for Mr. Grey

and Anastasia Steele will be played by these pretty woman

Who do you think should play the part?
